Effective communication and thereby managerial effi ciency is a function of mental
clarity and mental effi ciency. To use a computer systems analogy, the mind is a
human operating system. In this lesson, the author, Prof. S Jagadish of IIMB,
a communications theorist, IT specialist and trainer, concerns himself with the
effi ciency of the mind. The mind is not a black box known only to psychoanalysts.
Research in this area has revealed many processes and techniques relevant to refi
ning mental processes. Analytical skills can be learned, provided the ground rules
of logic are known. This lesson deals with the systematic process of reasoning,
the invalid argument, formal logic, syllogism, form and content and the rules of
validity. This is not a lesson in abstract logic but a practical guide to clear
thinking. Clear communication fl ows from clear thinking. Simulated situations and
role-plays facilitate easy learning.
