Privatisation
Dr. Vinod Vyasulu is the Director of the Development Research Foundation, Bangalore. For many years he was a faculty member at IIMB in the areas of Social Economics and Public Policy. This lesson, of which he is the author, is an exploratory study. It is not a prescriptive homily. The lesson traces the history of public enterprises in India. It traverses the period from the early days through the era of nationalisation. The author sets the context in which privatisation has become a major policy matter. Do such policy debates naturally spring up at a particular stage in the development of a nation’s economy? The lesson searches for an answer. What are the policies that constitute this bundle called ‘privatisation’? What are the necessary and suffi cient conditions that make privatisation policies successful? The slate cannot be wiped clean of socialistic philosophies or the rules of a command and control economy. With cases from the United Kingdom and armed with the fi ndings of Prof. Pankaj Tandon of Boston University, the author concludes this debate. The objective of this lesson is to free minds from the clutches of dogma.
