Organisation Design
What is an organisation? Can it be structured for effectiveness? What are the components of structure? This lesson by Dr. G K Valecha, Director, Essae Chandran Institute and a former Dean at IIMB, looks at the organisation as an entity. Given a set of objectives, which is the best suited form? Is there an easy answer? There is an in-depth exploration of the components of structure vis-a-vis complexity, formalisation and centralisation. Structural forms such as bureaucracy and ad hocracy and those with prefi xes such as Matrix, Committee, Functional, Divisional and Conglomerate are enumerated. The primary purpose of this lesson is to illustrate the argument that structure should be based on strategy and not vice versa. (Also see HM/OB6).
