Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
The basic accounting function is one of the most standardised of all management functions. Probably the only one to abide by a set of standardised rules. The rules are perfectly in order as long as they are derived from the same set of principles. Is it diffi cult to fathom as to why philosophies must lead ritual? There are international principles and there is an Indian subset. Prof. S Sundararajan of IIMB, a noted authority on accounting standards, leads one through this voyage of discovery - a voyage through the Upanishads of Accounting. Supplementing and complementing him, is another doyen of accounting standards, Dr. Kamal Gupta, the Executive Director of ICAI. Accounting policy choices are many, and it is in this context that GAAP directs good accounting governance.
