Participative Management
This study is set in the basic concepts of ‘Industrial Democracy ’, ‘Form and Social Purpose of Industrial Democracy’, ‘Industrial Governance’, ‘Management Prerogatives’ and ‘Trade Union Rights’. The author, Dr. Sarath Davala of IIMB, illustrates the what and why of Participative Management. He raises the questions of ‘What is in it for labour?’ and ‘What is in it for management?’ He debates the issues and illustrates his answers through empirical evidence. The Co-determination of Germany and the Participative Management in Sweden forms the back-drop while he traces the history of Participative Management in India. The early experiments and failures are studied. Do we need Participative Management? Is it part of the HRM model? (see HM/OB7). Is it culture specifi c? What are the preconditions for participation? This lesson provides the framework on which answers can be found.
