The production systems turned scientific with the coming of Frederick Winslow Taylor. The author Prof. S Somasundaram, a former Professor at IIT Mumbai and presently the Principal of the NTTF Industrial Training School, Bangalore, traces the long road from Taylor, through a US dominated era to the Japanese era and then on to the 21st century. Over the last 50 years, Production Management has evolved as a major discipline. Various techniques have emerged. The present frontier is to see manufacturing as a competitive strategy.
